3B.1 Dialogue / Role Play

Sue: Do you like your apartment?
John: It’s okay, but I wish it were bigger. There isn’t enough space.
Sue: I understand. I live in a big house, but I wish it were closer to my work.
John: That makes sense. I also wish I lived in a quieter place. There’s too much noise here.
Sue: Yes, location is important. I wish I had more free time at home, too.
john: Me too. I wish my lifestyle were more relaxed.
Sue: Maybe one day we can find better places that fit our needs.
John: I hope so!
3B.2 Vocabulary
Read each word, say it out loud, check the meaning, and practice it every day.
3B.3 Grammar
Look at each grammar point, read the examples, and try to make your own simple sentences.

Common Errors
1. Using present tense instead of past tense
I wish I have a bigger apartment.
I wish I had a bigger apartment.
After wish, use the past simple for present situations.
2. Using “was” instead of “were”
I wish it was bigger.
I wish it were bigger.
Use were for all subjects (especially in formal English).
3. Confusing “wish” with “hope”
I wish I will move to a new house next year.
I hope I will move to a new house next year.
Wish = unreal or not true now
Hope = possible future
4. Forgetting to change the verb form
I wish I live in a house.
I wish I lived in a house.
Always change the verb to the past form.
5. Using “wish” + “to” incorrectly
I wish to have a bigger apartment. (when talking about now)
I wish I had a bigger apartment.
Wish to is more formal and not used for everyday unreal situations.
