Unit 2: Life in the city
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- Describe transportation systems and common urban problems using appropriate vocabulary and expressions of quantity (e.g., too much traffic, not enough buses, fewer delays).
- Evaluate and compare city services by expressing opinions and supporting them with reasons (e.g., identifying problems and suggesting improvements using more, less, better).
- Ask for and give information using indirect questions (e.g., Could you tell me where the nearest bus stop is?) in real-life communication contexts.

2A.1 Dialogue / Role Play

Ava: How do you usually get to work?
Liam: I take the bus, but honestly, there are too many delays and not enough buses during rush hour.
Ava: Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. I drive most days, but there’s too much traffic downtown, especially in the mornings.
Liam: I think the city needs more frequent bus service. It would reduce traffic if more people used public transit.
Ava: I agree. The buses are cheaper than driving, but the system isn’t as reliable. We need better scheduling and fewer delays.
Liam: Exactly. Also, there should be more bike lanes. That would give people another option and help reduce congestion.
Ava: Definitely. Right now, there are too few safe cycling routes. If the city improved that, I’d probably bike to work more often.
Liam: So overall, public transportation is affordable, but it needs more investment to be efficient.
Ava: Yes—better service and less waiting time would make a big difference.
2A.2 Vocabulary
Read each word, say it out loud, check the meaning, and practice it every day.
tourist
streetlight
parking
recycling
green space
traffic jam
garage
pollution
2A.3 Grammar
Look at each grammar point, read the examples, and try to make your own simple sentences.

Common Errors
1. Too much vs. too many
There is too much cars on the street.
There are too many cars on the street.
Tip: Much → uncountable nouns (traffic, water); many → countable nouns (cars, buses).
2. Less vs. fewer
There are less buses today.
There are fewer buses today.
Tip: Fewer → countable nouns; less → uncountable nouns.
3. Better vs. more
The parks would be more if there were more benches.
The parks would be better if there were more benches.
Tip: Better → quality improvement; more → quantity.
4. Double negatives with less/fewer
There are not less buses today.
There are fewer buses today.
Tip: Avoid combining “not” with less/fewer; it’s grammatically incorrect here.
5. Subject-verb agreement with plural nouns
There is too many buses on the street.
There are too many buses on the street.
Tip: Countable plural nouns require plural verbs (are, have, etc.).

2A.6 Speaking Task 2
Talk About Your City’s Transportation
Instructions:
Record a 1–2 minute audio describing your city’s transportation system and urban problems. Include the following:
- Describe transportation and urban issues
- Use vocabulary related to transportation (e.g., buses, subways, traffic, bike lanes).
- Include expressions of quantity: too much traffic, not enough buses, fewer delays.
- Evaluate and compare city services
- Give your opinion about the quality of services.
- Suggest improvements using comparative language: more, less, better, not as good as….
- Support your ideas with reasons
- Example: There are too many cars on the road, so traffic is always heavy. The bus service could be more frequent to reduce delays.
Optional Sentence Starters
- In my city, there are… / There isn’t enough…
- Traffic is too… / The buses are not… enough
